Surf Fishing Report - March 29th 2024

Boyd, Chris, and Jack with a stellar catch of a 3 pound Pompano.

Hey everyone what’s going on! We took our clients Jack, Boyd, and Chris out for a day on the beach and we had a blast. The days leading up to this charter we’re windy/blown out and a tad rough. I had a good feeling though if the wind direction stayed consistent enough we would have a window of clean water and also have the opportunity to fish a productive time of the tide for our trip. When we started with lines in the water it was a little tough to say what the action was going to be like, but Jack and Boyd made that challenge easy for us. The kids had an absolute whale of a time watching the rod tips for bites and working together to reel in their catches. On this day we saw HUGE keeper Pompano, whiting, jacks, croakers, bluefish, smaller hardhead catfish, and a large sailcat that took the family for a run. I would say from what our client Chris told us, that catching the big pompano was one of the highlights of the day. While finishing up our trip and starting to clean the catch for our clients, one of the fishing rods went off (we like to leave rods out as long as possible while fishing). I noticed a hit that made the rod look extremely slack, but there was a bit of sway in the line that threw me for a loop thinking maybe I had gotten sharked because right now if you’re not aware you’re hooked up and you haven’t reeled in your fish yet…. a shark is like waiting to execute his mission of stealing the fish. I alerted Jack to run over and help me reel this line in, as soon as the line became taught I knew something was on the end of the line, and it was BIG from the relocation of our rigs/bait from where they were once casted into. As we gained on the fish and we could see it’s profile in the wash, I saw the biggest pompano of our season. I’ve caught well into 100 pounds of fish already, and yes, this was a giant. Coming in at 16 and a half inches this fish had to have weighed a minimum of 3 pounds. Chris, the father heard me yell over to Matt and instantly he knew, it was a worthy fish. This topped off the trip for us as guides and the cherry on top was getting our clients what I like to call “the million dollar fish”. The boys peeled themselves off the beach and went home with a nice bag of fresh fish filets and the big pompano to which they enjoyed for dinner that night. “So goood! Unreal”
